African Robotics Challenge 2019
African Robotics Challenge 2019 was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of African ingenuity, collaboration, and the unstoppable spirit of youth. iNERDE partnered with several leaders throughout the African continent to form the African Collective Impact Initiative (ACII) which organized the event marking a significant leap toward empowering the next generation of African innovators. The goal? To equip young minds with the skills and confidence to build and leverage digital technologies to tackle the world’s biggest challenges.
Teams from across Africa came together in Pretoria for a day of fierce but friendly competition. Each country was represented by a team mentor and three brilliant students, all eager to showcase their robotics prowess. Despite the financial challenges, teams showed incredible determination in raising funds for travel, accommodation, and other expenses. Their commitment to being part of this historic event was nothing short of inspiring.
One of the most heart-warming moments was when Team Lesotho, who faced technical difficulties with their robot, received help from Team Spring Bots South Africa. With their extra robot, MadibaBot, the spirit of camaraderie shone through, proving that robotics isn’t just about winning; it’s about building a better world together.
In a thrilling finale, Team Lesotho emerged victorious, claiming the top spot at ARC 2019. Their journey from early morning travel to triumph on the big stage is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and unity. The competition was tough, with Team Lesotho going head-to-head with other countries, but in the end, it was their teamwork and determination that made them the champions.
The success of ARC 2019 is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together. A year ago, at F1RST Global Challenge in Mexico City, we dreamt of expanding STEM and robotics in Africa. That dream became a reality, and it’s only the beginning. We look forward to many more years of fostering young talent, uniting Africa through robotics, and building a brighter future for all.
